David Jensen, DVM

Owner veterinarian

Born and raised in Maryland, Dr. David W. Jensen attended the University of Maryland, College Park for his undergraduate education. After three years in the Animal Science program, he was accepted into the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida where his medical interests developed in equine medicine and reproduction. Dr. Jensen obtained his degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1982 and along with his family, moved to San Diego county California to complete a surgical and radiology internship at the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital.  From there they moved to the Santa Ynez Valley where he and his wife Karen established San Marcos Equine in 1985 in the heart of the California thoroughbred breeding community. Today, Dr. Jensen maintains a primary care medical practice with a special clinical interest in OPHTHALMOLOGY, PODIATRY and REPRODUCTION.


Lisa Carman

Assistant to Dr. Jensen

Lisa joined SME in 1998 and serves as Dr. Jensen’s assistant.  She provides excellent client service as your main contact for scheduling, invoicing, and general healthcare questions.  Lisa’s love for the horse extends beyond the office—she is an accomplished horsewoman and regularly participates in Hunter/Jumper competitions throughout the California region.

Karen Gearhart-Jensen

Practice Manager

Karen began the practice with Dr. Jensen in 1985 and has remained as the overall administrative and practice manager.  Working behind the scene, she handles bookkeeping, technology, and all other business operation systems in the practice.  Karen is also an artist and works from her studio in Los Alamos, CA. Pete Healey

Podiatry Partner

Pete and Dr. Jensen work together to solve the many podiatry issues that are prevalent today. They are in the process of forming a non-profit organization in order to educate horse owners and farriers, and formulate methods of alleviating lameness. Pete plays a key role in keeping our patients sound and happy.
